Road crews work to repair roads throughout the Mahoning Valley
Mahoning Valley - The constant freeze-thaw cycle is taking a toll on many roads across the Mahoning Valley.
Crews in Trumbull County said they are working around the clock to repair them before another cold snap hits the area.
"We start in one area of the township and we just work all the way from South to North and North to South," David King, superintendent of Warren Township Road Department said.
Street departments in Warren and Youngstown are using cold patch asphalt from a hotbox to make temporary repairs. Department leaders said they have more than enough material to smooth things over for now.
"[The hot box] holds about two and a half ton [of asphalt]. When it gets empty, we just go to the county and they fill it back up, and then we're ready for the next day," King said.
"This year we're almost close to 300 ton of coal mix material, applied one shovel at a time," Kevin Flinn, building and grounds commissioner of Youngstown said.
Dozens of streets throughout Youngstown are still rough, but the three man crew at the department said filling as many potholes as they can is a top priority. Flinn told 21 News that the Youngstown Street Department occasionally works late at night to fill potholes.
"We've been working our midnight shift [and] our weekends. We just ask for patience and to give our crews space so they can work safely," Flinn said
Both King and Flinn noted that potholes are forming more quickly this year compared to last year.
