Austintown woman found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter after overdose death of child

A Mahoning County jury has found an Austintown woman not guilty of involuntary manslaughter after her son died of a fentanyl overdose.
However, the jury did find 31-year-old Brianna Zagotti guilty on the charge of endangering children after a four day trial in Judge Maureen Sweeney's courtroom.
Those charges stem from an incident from July of 2023 when Zagotti's son died of a fentanyl overdose just days before his second birthday.
In July 2023, police responded to Zagotti’s residence at the Compass West
apartment complex in Austintown, where her child was found unresponsive.
The autopsy results later showed the presence of fentanyl in the child’s system.
However, police say Zagotti and the child's father told officers there were no drugs in the apartment that the toddler could have encountered.
Zagotti will be sentenced at a later date.
