Energy company seeks to build solar complex in Columbiana County
The owners of the the Kensington Process Plant in Hanover want to build a 22 megawatt solar project near the property.
A spokesperson for Williams Companies said if the project is executed, it will help minimize emissions and decrease energy costs by reducing electricity usage during on-peak periods.
Back in 2023, wind and solar farms were banned in all 18 townships of Columbiana County. County leaders and residents expressed strong opposition to renewable energy.
This time around, commissioner Mike Halleck said the size and purpose of this proposed solar farm set it apart from others.
"They fall under the 50 megawatt threshold that is regulated by the state, and frankly, the board of commissioners have no say or nothing to do with that," Halleck said.
Local leaders said if the project moves forward, it would take up space on a 100 acre lot owned by Williams Companies. The first step would be clearing the trees from the area.
According to trustee, John Zehentbauer, the company would start the project in March. Zehentbauer said the project is estimated to be complete by the end of the year.
