The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a new statement on Thursday regarding the measles outbreak occurring in West Texas.

According to the statement, the U.S Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is providing technical assistance, laboratory support, vaccines and therapeutic medicine as needed to the Texas Department of State and Health Services and New Mexico Department of Health.

Both the Texas Department of State and Health Services and New Mexico Department of Health are leading the responses to the outbreaks within their jurisdiction.

The statement went on to say that measles outbreaks are occurring globally, particularly in Asia, which could mean an increased likelihood of measles cases among unvaccinated travelers returning to the U.S.

This same type of example was noticed in the February 19 case of an Orange County, California resident returning from Asia according to the statement.

The statement maintains that vaccination remains the best defense against measles infection.
