Sharpsville woman accused of collecting $55K from checks stolen from employer

A Sharpsville woman is due to appear in Mercer County Court Wednesday to answer allegations that she collected cash from nearly $56,000 in checks stolen from her employer.
Pymatuning Township Police have charged 44-year-old Erin Carter with theft, forgery, and criminal use of a communication facility. All charges are felonies.
Officials at the First National Bank branch on Tippecanoe Road told Boardman Police that a customer deposited approximately 107 stolen checks, totaling $55,831, into her account via the bank’s mobile app and then withdrew the funds.
The checks were customer refund checks stolen from the Edgewood Surgical Center in Transfer, Pennsylvania, where the Carter worked as a payment processor, the report stated.
Pymatuning Police say Carter admitted that she took the checks to help her with her spending problems.
The first check was deposited on January 30, 2024, and the last on October 15, 2024.
A bank investigator told police that because the checks were not made payable to a specific person, the bank was responsible for reimbursing the 107 customers of the surgical center. The bank is now out the $55,831.
Pymatuning Police filed the charges against Carter in November. Boardman Police say they don’t intend to file charges against her.
