POLICE: Student claims to have brought gun to Chaney Middle School for 'protection'

Youngstown police have released more details on an incident where a student allegedly brought a gun to Chaney Middle School Friday morning.
A representative for the Youngstown City School District (YCSD) told 21 News a student was passing through the school's metal detector Friday, February 28 when the alarm went off.
The district says the student was pulled aside to be searched and a school resource officer found a gun on him. The student was then immediately removed from the front entrance.
According to the district, the gun never made it past the front entrance and the weapon was never fired. No students were hurt.
According to the police report, the student told police the gun belonged to his father and he brought it to school "for protection" due to threats made to him by another student.
The student was arrested and charged with conveyance of a deadly weapon on school premises.
YCSD's weapons policy states that all students are required to go through metal detectors to check for weapons or other contraband and items like bookbags and purses will be searched.
Anyone caught with a weapon or weapon-like item will be referred for expulsion.
