The Trumbull County Sheriff's Office is investigating the placement of a credit card skimmer on a register at a Newton Falls business.

An employee at the IGA on Superior Street reported that the skimmer was discovered last Friday, telling 21 News it had only been in place for approximately one hour, and no customer information was compromised.

Criminals use Credit card skimmers to steal financial data and other personal information from unsuspecting consumers.

The IGA employee stated that customers were notified about the discovery through social media.

The Sheriff's Office dispatched a deputy to IGA Friday evening to collect the device.

This incident follows similar discoveries of skimmers at grocery stores in Boardman and Cortland.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services has issued a warning to recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, urging them to be vigilant about skimmers used to steal Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) numbers.

In a related development, the Ohio Investigative Unit and the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office recently announced the indictment of a Brooklyn, New York, man and his company for allegedly defrauding Ohio SNAP recipients of more than $125,000 in benefits.
