Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has signed an executive order to streamline the process of filling job vacancies in the Commonwealth with federal workers who were fired through cuts ordered by the Trump administration.

Shapiro’s order directs the Office of Administration to recognize federal government experience as equivalent to Commonwealth work experience for civil service positions. This change will allow individuals with relevant federal backgrounds in fields such as civil engineering, nursing, corrections, and accounting to more easily qualify for open state positions.

The Shapiro Administration will also launch targeted recruitment efforts aimed at federal employees. These initiatives include a new website providing information on state government opportunities, as well as virtual and in-person job fairs.

"Currently, Pennsylvania still has 540 critical jobs to fill, and we have a valuable opportunity to recruit federal workers and veterans who possess significant experience and expertise in these fields, having already held similar positions at the federal level or in the military,” said Governor Shapiro. “This Executive Order directs my Administration to consider relevant federal work experience as equivalent to Commonwealth work experience.”

Shapiro signed the executive order at the second annual Commonwealth Job Fair in Harrisburg, which featured over 40 state agencies.
