2000: During a visit to Kent State University's new $11 million technology building at the Trumbull Branch, Gov. Bob Taft says he's optimistic about the long-term future of the Mahoning Valley.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an attorney for the Hudson Riverkeeper, a New York environmental group, will present the second annual Edward W. Greenberger Memorial Lecture at Penn State Shenango in Sharon.
Mark Shutes, president of the Youngstown State University Chapter of the Ohio Education Association, says university trustees have established a lower standard for responding to possible misconduct by administrators than that which is followed regarding faculty at large.
1985: A caravan of 35 cars and vans organized by the Youngstown and Warren boards of Realtors sets off for Detroit to deliver about 200,000 cards and letters to General Motors expressing the Mahoning Valley's support for a Saturn car plant.
First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Youngstown breaks ground for a $2.1 million headquarters building on Route 224 at Bridgewood Avenue.
A crowd estimated by police at 25,000 lined Route 224 in Boardman for Pete Gabriel's seventh annual St. Patrick's Day parade.
1975: The Trumbull County Treasurer's office, sealed for four days after the board of commissioners acted to remove Treasurer Carl Lupi from office, reopens with Lupi and 20 employees on duty and commissioners announcing a compromise.
Youngstown Municipal Judge Leo P. Morley dismisses charges against two men accused of kidnapping and attempting to murder a Lake Milton man on orders from mobster Joey Naples. Defense lawyer Don L. Hanni Jr. argued that the charges were based on politics, not evidence.
1950: Youngstown Police Chief Edward J. Allen says two experienced traffic patrolmen will be assigned to a special cruiser to cover the city and perform accident-prevention work.
Three proposals for repairing the temporary wooden Division Street Bridge range from $72,000 to $114,000.
Two F-51 planes on a training flight with three others collide near Steubenville, killing both pilots, Lt. William Drazic of Steubenville and Lt. Neil H. Diehl of Columbus.
