Three counties in the Mahoning Valley rank among the top ten in Ohio for natural gas production according to a report compiled by a group that promotes the oil and gas industry in the state.

A report released by the Ohio Natural Energy Institute (ONEi) details natural gas and oil production figures for Ohio counties in 2023, including those in the northeast region. The report, utilizing data from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Oil and Gas Resources, provides production statistics for Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull counties.

According to the report, Columbiana County ranked sixth in natural gas production and fourth in oil production within the state. The county produced 92,233,668 thousand cubic feet of natural gas and 1,001,696 barrels of oil in 2023. The county has 1,131 producing wells, with a total of 1,316 wells drilled.

Mahoning County ranked ninth in natural gas production and 14th in oil production. The county's 2023 production figures include 4,726,829 thousand cubic feet of natural gas and 94,750 barrels of oil. Mahoning County has 2,080 producing wells, with 2,244 wells drilled in total.

Trumbull County ranked 10th in natural gas production and 21st in oil production. The county produced 4,457,905 thousand cubic feet of natural gas and 56,350 barrels of oil in 2023. Trumbull County reports 2,012 producing wells, with 2,269 wells drilled.

The ONEi report also provided statewide and national context for the production figures. Ohio ranked seventh in U.S. natural gas production, accounting for approximately 5 percent of U.S. production and reserves. The Appalachian Basin, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, accounted for nearly 38 percent of total U.S. natural gas production.

The report emphasized the role of natural gas and oil in various aspects of daily life and the economy. It cited the United States as a leading country in emissions reductions.
