Two WRTA bus routes in Trumbull County to be eliminated
Over the past few years bus routes in Trumbull County have steadily declined. Now, public transit may become even more complicated for people in Warren.
On May 30 WRTA bus routes 73 West and 74 Elm will be eliminated, with the exception of older adults and people with disabilities.
The WRTA executive director says federal dollars will no longer pay for those bus routes in Warren.
"We had a grant to run [the routes] for a year, and we actually got 15 months out of the grant. But unfortunately, the funding is running out and they'll be canceled," Dean Harris said.
Harris told 21 News that if the the city and county can come up with their share of additional funding, he would be willing to look for another grant. However, Trumbull County Transit Administrator, Mike Salamone said he is hearing that those entities have no interest.
"They have decided not to put any money into it," Salamone said.
The county will receive a new transportation grant for seniors and people with disabilities in April, but that money cannot be used for these routes.
