Youngstown woman sentenced to 20 to 24 years in prison for deadly DUI crash
A Youngstown woman has learned her fate on Thursday for a fatal crash in which she drove an SUV while intoxicated at more than three times the legal limit.
Kyashia Madison, 29, was sentenced to 20 to 24 years in prison on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, three counts of aggravated vehicular assault, endangering children and driving under the influence.
In 2023, Madison was driving three times over the legal limit, with her four children in the back seat. This decision led to the death of nineteen year old Danasia Douglas, who was a passenger in a car that was struck by Madison.
"What we asked for is that the sentences for the various crimes be imposed consecutively, meaning one after another. There were multiple people injured in addition to the fatality, and judge sweeney did impose those consecutive sentences, so we were very pleased with that," said Lynn Maro, Mahoning County Prosecutor.
Just before the sentence was given, members of the families went up to the podium and spoke about their feels after the crash. Yolanda Winlock, Douglas' mother, said life has not been the same since the accident.
"I know she didn't come out to intentionally hurt my daughter, but the consequences of drinking and driving, she took my daughter's life," said Winlock.
Jasmine Hyde, the mother of the man driving the vehicle that Douglas was killed in read a statement on behalf of her son.
"I prayed you learned a lesson, and I'm thankful there will be one less drunk driver on my street. No one deserved what happened," said Hyde.
During the family's statements, Madison broke down with emotion. After feeling faint, defense attorney Mark Lavelle read a statement from Madison. Here is part of Madison's statement:
"Sorry for all the trauma I caused to your family, and my kids as well. I wish I was able to take any pain and hurt I caused away. I wish it was me to lose my life, and not a baby girl.."
Madison pleaded guilty earlier to six of the eleven charges filed against her following the August 16, 2023, crash.
Maro is quoted in a press release praising officers with the Youngstown Police Department, as well as Assistant Prosecutors with the Mahoning County Prosecutor's Office for their work in this case.
"Choosing to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a reckless decision that endangers everyone on the road. This was a preventable tragedy," Maro said.
According to police reports, the accident occurred shortly after 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Victor and Commonwealth Avenues. Madison's blood alcohol level was recorded as .255 when the GMC Yukon SUV she was driving struck the side of a Chevrolet Cobalt.
Douglas, a backseat passenger in the Cobalt, was transported to the hospital where she later died from her injuries. The police report also indicated that several children and toddlers were in the SUV with Madison. All four juveniles sustained minor injuries.
