2000: A proposed sale of Bliss Technologies falls through, and plants employing 350 in Newton Falls and 150 in Austintown are closed.

An estimated 12,000 people brave below-freezing temperatures and high winds to watch the 22nd St. Patrick's Day parade in Boardman.

The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce will honor Herman Maass, manager of the General Motors Lordstown plant, and C. Gilbert James,  president of James & Sons in Boardman, at its annual meeting. 

 

1985: North Star Steel Co. gives Youngstown until April 1 to decide whether the company's offer of a $100 million investment in the former Hunt Steel plant on Federal Street is worth a 10-year tax abatement.

Superintendent Nick Macris told the school board that the Howland Local School District is in danger of losing its accreditation due to deteriorating buildings and inadequate library facilities.

The Diocese of Youngstown will build a $250,000 monastery addition to the Villa Maria Convent on Warner Road in Liberty in conjunction with the Oblate Sisters of the Sacred Heart. 

 

1975: Youngstown Municipal Court Judge Leo Morley dismisses charges of complicity against racket figure Joey Naples and accuses the Youngstown Police Department of conducting a "political witch hunt."

Gail Wright, a Rayen senior, is one of 394 winners in the 11th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program for  Outstanding Negro Students. 

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio says East Ohio Gas Co. must provide gas to residential and small-commercial customers until Dec. 31. The company wanted to put a freeze into effect on March 1.

 

1950: Two of five buildings planned for Grove City College's $3 million expansion program are nearing completion. Joseph Pew, a Sun Oil official, and the Pew Foundation are providing $1.5 million. 

The completion of Packard Electric's Plant 7 on Dana Street adds 7,000 square feet of floor space to General Motors' operations in Warren. Construction will start soon on an addition to the Thomas Road plant.
