2000: Carmen Conglose, Youngstown's deputy director of public works, says the four-story Strouss parking deck at the Wick Avenue bridge and Commerce Street will be demolished before it can crumble further.
Union and management will begin meeting to discuss revamping the General Motors Assembly Plant at Lordstown, which company officials say is more cost-effective than building a new plant.
U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. says he's found a qualified buyer for Bliss Technology plants in Newton Falls and Austintown.
1985: Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Mitchell F. Shaker orders county commissioners to reinstate the 30 percent cut in funding for Clerk of Courts Violet Whitman, ruling that the funding is necessary for the administration of justice. The ruling is expected to spur a similar suit by Sheriff Richard Jakmas.
Five Mahoning and Shenango Valley congressmen all voted against further funding for MX missiles but were on the losing end of a 219-213 vote. Those opposing President Reagan's defense initiative were James Traficant, Dennis Eckart, Douglas Applegate, Joseph Kolter, all Democrats, and Tom Ridge, a Republican. Traficant said the MX is not a cost-effective weapons system and that Democrats who voted for it were afraid of being labeled anti-defense.
The Salem Historical Society has raised almost $33,000 needed to move "Liberty Hall" on North Ellsworth Avenue to a site safe from planned redevelopment. The building is believed to have played a role in Salem's Civil War-era abolitionist movement.

1950: Mrs. Valentine Pavone of Edgehill Avenue is in fair condition in South Side Hospital with injuries suffered when her car overturned on Meridian Road after hitting several bad holes in the road.
Trumbull County Judge George Birrell orders the padlocking of the Dew Drop Inn in Niles until further court order.
