21 WFMJ archives / April 9, 1961 | The 8th annual Mahoning County High School Music Festival held 64 years ago attracted bands and choruses from 12 schools to Jackson Milton High School. The concert, which featured 450 singers and 135 musicians, was held on April 12, with a rehearsal on April 8. Among the band directors at the rehearsal were, from left, Esotto Pellegrini, North Lima; Emil LaCivita, Lowellville; Carl Evans, Sebring-McKinley; B.E. Lehto, Poland; Lee Gruber, Jackson Milton and Richard Bame, Boardman.

2000: Youngstown Bishop James W. Malone, a native son who fostered ecumenicism while rising in the hierarchy of the Catholic Church to gain the ear of presidents and popes, dies of cancer at the age of 80.
During spring break, nine security cameras will be installed in Niles McKinley High School.
Gregory Greenwood, president of Greenwood Chevrolet and Market Motor Co., is named president of the Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio.
1985: The city and Youngstown Thermal discuss a $1 million plan to replace decaying steam pipes downtown.
Syndicated columnist and TV personality Erma Bombeck is in Sharon with a crew to film various venues and events. The crew is trying to counter a Rand McNally survey that rated Sharon last among 349 cities for culture. Bombeck, who visited the city in 1984 and has family in the area, says Rand McNally gave the city a bad rap.
Robert Carano, a former WFMJ-TV news director and sales manager, is named executive director of the Trumbull County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
1975: The A&P food chain is closing four district stores, including one at the Austintown Plaza, two in Warren, and one in Newton Falls. Six A&Ps remain open in Youngstown.
Mayor Jack C. Hunter says Youngstown city water users are almost certain to get a water rate increase if the MVSD is granted the full 42 percent it is seeking in its wholesale rate.
