A federal magistrate has ordered a Wellsville man accused of threatening a shootout with law enforcement in online videos to be detained pending a pre-trial hearing.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Reuben J. Sheperd issued the order, citing “clear and convincing evidence” that no condition or combination of conditions would reasonably assure the safety of the community and specific individuals if Steven Wright is released from federal custody.

The detention order notes that Wright, 45, is charged with a crime of violence. It highlights Wright's alleged "numerous specific threats" made via Facebook videos targeting law enforcement officers, judicial officials, and potentially others in the community.

The threats described detailed plans for a shootout with local police and included language urging officers to "make peace with God." Wright also allegedly threatened an unnamed individual.

Wright was located two days after the videos were discovered near the Wellsville Police Department. He reportedly refused police orders to exit his vehicle for about an hour before being arrested. A search of the vehicle allegedly yielded a loaded handgun.

Wright was indicted on a federal charge of transmitting a threatening interstate communication. The indictment stemmed from videos allegedly posted on Feb. 18 where he threatened a shootout with Wellsville police and Columbiana County Sheriff’s deputies if a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Following the federal indictment, prosecutors moved to dismiss related charges in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court.

Wright was still being held at the Mahoning County Justice Center as of Thursday morning
