2000: Thirty-two bishops, archbishops, and cardinals attend the funeral of Youngstown Bishop James W. Malone at St. Columba Cathedral. "His death will leave a hole in my life and I suspect the lives of everyone here," says Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk of Cincinnati.
Former owner of the Cleveland Indians, Dick Jacobs throws out the first pitch at the Indians opener at Jacobs Field. The new owner, Larry Dolan, welcomed Jacobs to the stadium.
Local police and fire chiefs appear to be united in their opposition to Mahoning County Sheriff Randall Wellington's attempt to retake control of 911 call services.
1985: The Starlight Cafe on Center Road in Poland Township is destroyed by fire, with the loss estimated at $500,000.
Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, Archbishop of Chicago, tells 1,200 people at St. Columba Cathedral that Youngstown Bishop James W. Malone's 25 years as a bishop are extraordinary, spanning the preparation for the Second Vatican Council, the council itself, and its implementation. The event also celebrated the 40th anniversary of his ordination.
U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. leaves for Japan, where he plans to talk with officials of Mitsubishi Corp. about locating an auto plant in the Mahoning Valley.
1975: About 2,000 furloughed employees are back on the job at the Lordstown General Motors complex, swelling the workforce to more than 10,000 as the Vega-Astre line prepares to start a second shift.
Israel unveils its first home-built fighter-bomber, the Kfir, marking a new milestone in the Jewish state's drive for military self-sufficiency.

1950: Mahoning County Juvenile Court Judge Henry P. Beckenbach says the Rev. Peter A. Eid, a priest who shot and wounded a 13-year-old boy escaping from St. Maron Church after stealing from the poor box, showed poor judgment.
Three off-duty Warren firemen saved the life of William Toth, 28, who was shocked when a kite he was flying came in contact with a high-tension line. The firemen were installing a TV antenna at the Golden Stallion on S. Main Avenue when they heard a crack and saw Toth fall to the ground.
