The City of Cortland shared in a newsletter that it is seeking a Director of Public Service to serve under the City's Charter form of government and lead the city's Service Department.

According to the job description and information page found on the City of Cortland's website, the Director of Public Service would be responsible for collecting and analyzing data from various sources to provide actionable recommendations and insights.

The information page also states that the role manages a broad range of projects, services and activities.

The position requires strong coordination and communication skills, as well as the ability to foster productive relationships with city staff, external organizations, businesses and the public according to the release.

Later in the information page, it states that a strong understanding of city ordinances and local, state and federal regulations is required.

The Director of Public Service role receives guidance from the mayor.

Primary job duties are described in the information page to include oversight of the Service Department within the city. This includes the supervision of several employees, budgeting, scheduling, project management and other strategic initiatives that evolve over time.

According to the information page, the primary responsibilities also include managing and auditing a variety of large projects, including:

  • Public works infrastructure operations
  • Capital asset management
  • EPA compliance
  • Other related public service programs

The information page outlines the list of minimum qualifications for any interested applicant of this role, including:

  • Education: Graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in engineering or related field.
  • Qualifications: Must possess or obtain and maintain a water utilities operator license within two years of hire. State of Ohio registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience: 10 years of increasingly responsible experience as planning, consulting or assistant engineer with a city, county or regional office or firm which does work for government agencies. Additionally, five years of management, supervisory and budgeting experience.

According to the information page, a pay range of $80,000 to $115,000 with applicable retirement, vacation and sick time and a generous health insurance policy is being offered as compensation for the role.
