Youngstown mourns Pastor James C. Reynolds: Founding member of The Edsels

Dr. James C. Reynolds, a beloved pastor, musician and U.S. Air Force veteran passed away on April 11 at 86 years old. He will be remembered during a series of memorial services on April 25 and 26 in Hubbard and Youngstown.
Reynolds, born in 1938 in Atmore, Alabama was a founding member of The Edsels who were best known for their 1961 hit song "Rama Lama Ding Dong."
He performed at venues such as the Apollo Theater and Radio City Music Hall and on shows such as The Ed Sullivan Show and American Bandstand.
Alongside his music career, Reynolds served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves for nearly four decades and received several top honors, including Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star.
He balanced his military career with work at General Motors and a profound call to ministry.
In 1972, he founded and served as pastor of Early Morning Church of God in Christ in Youngstown for over 50 years.
Reynolds and his wife State Church Mother Louise mentored generations in ministry and youth leadership. His sons later formed the gospel group The Reynolds Brothers.
Calling hours will be on Friday, April 25 from 5-8 p.m. at Phillips Chapel COGIC located at 3903 Jacobs Road in Hubbard.
Celebration of life will be on Saturday, April 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church located at 8707 Hillman Street in Youngstown.
