2000: Austintown Township trustees are reviving a drive to bring the township under the state's new home rule status, which allows townships with populations of 15,000 or more to adopt some governance rules available to cities.
Youngstown State University's Williamson School of Business, which has 1,875 students, is accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business. Dean Dr. Betty Jo Licata says only about 30 percent of the business schools in the U.S. have that level of accreditation.
Area veterinarian Dr. Donald Allen is featured on an NBC "Dateline" exposé of puppy mills in Ohio, which will air on WFMJ-TV.
1985: Salem City Council kills an ordinance that would have restricted satellite TV dishes in the city because it was seen as unenforceable.
Youngstown City Council delays action on legislation banning video poker machines in the city until the courts rule on whether the machines are gambling devices.
Trumbull County commissioners tabled a resolution to place a four-year, half-percent sales tax on the ballot until a plan for spending the money is drafted.
1975: Two children die in a fire at their two-story brick duplex on W. Seventh Street in East Liverpool. Dead are Brian and Brett Wright, 4 and 5 years old.
Clare O'Brien, Trumbull County recorder, is named Warren's Woman of the Year at the 25th annual awards dinner of the Warren Business and Professional Women's Club.
With Communist-led troops mounting a massive attack on Saigon, U.S. officials are trying to evacuate 10,000 Americans and Vietnamese a day.
1950: Frank Purnell is elected chairman of the board of the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co., relinquishing the presidency he has held for 20 years to J.L. Mauthe.
Mrs. Frederick C. Gerthing, president of the Youngstown Council of Parents and Teachers, is named to the board of managers of the Ohio PTA during the 28th annual conference of the Northeast Ohio District, meeting in Youngstown. Some 2,500 members attended a meeting in the Warner Theater.
The Navy reports plans to build a radical new type of submarine, one powered by atomic energy.
