Boardman Township mechanic resigns following alleged misuse of township funds

A Boardman Township mechanic has resigned following an investigation into his alleged misuse of township funds.
According to an affidavit filed in Mahoning County Court in March of 2025, former township mechanic Michael Carkido is suspected of using township funds to pay for personal expenses.
It all started on March 5 when low-profile performance tires were found in the township's garage. According to the affidavit, these tires are meant for vehicles such as Cadillacs, which Boardman Township does not use.
Township Road Superintendent Kim Blasco then began an investigation into this matter by launching an internal audit into purchasing records for police department parts and equipment purchased between January 2024 and March of 2025.
That audit revealed alleged irregularities in purchasing parts that would not be usable for any of Boardman Township's police vehicles. Following these findings, Carkido was placed on paid leave as the investigation continued.
According to the audit, further investigation revealed that Carkido's son owned a vehicle with which those parts would be compatible.
Additionally, a review of Auto Zone purchase records showed purchases of brake pads, oil filters and brake rotors for several vehicle makes, but none being compatible with any of the township's vehicles.
According to the affidavit, further investigation revealed Carkido allegedly had a side business where he repairs vehicles with repairs inlcuding oil changes, filter repairs and tire repairs.
Additionally, Carkido had allegedly been seen using a tire changer in the township garage for changing tires in the side business.
A search warrant was then conducted where several auto parts were seized. Other items seized included an iPhone charging station, shelving items and a graphing calculator.
An employee at the Boardman Township Street Department confirmed with 21 News that Carkido had since resigned from his position in the township. The exact date of his resignation is unclear at this time.
