Howland Township restaurant Wahaka Taco to be listed for sale

HOWLAND TWP., Ohio - Wahaka Taco, a Mexican restaurant in Howland Township, will soon be listed for sale, owner Mark Canzonetta announced in a Facebook post Wednesday.
Canzonetta, a local chef and businessman, expressed gratitude to the community for its support over the past two years but cited difficulties with township regulations as a significant factor in the decision.
"Unfortunately, Howland Township made it extremely difficult for us to open and operate," Canzonetta wrote on Facebook, pointing to zoning restrictions, impact protection plans, signage limitations, and high construction costs. He also suggested the community preferred "familiar and processed options" over what he said is his restaurant's focus on authentic, high-quality ingredients and a "different style of Mexican food."
21 News reached out to Howland Township officials for comment on this statement. Trustee Chair Dr. James LaPolla said the township has done "any and everything" it could for him and honored all of his requests, most recently approving a liquor permit for the restaurant.
LaPolla said he believes some of the challenges the business faced came from the construction from the Diverging Diamond Interchange project, which is handled by the Ohio Department of Transportation, not the township.
Wahaka Taco, located at 132 Niles Cortland Road NE, opened in January 2023.
In his Facebook post, Canzonetta thanked his staff. He indicated a desire to find a community that shares his enthusiasm for "authentic, high-quality, and innovative culinary experiences."
