BOARDMAN, Ohio - Two former Big Lots locations in the Mahoning Valley are scheduled to reopen their doors today under new ownership, months after the company announced the closure of all its stores.

The stores at 7100 South Avenue in Boardman and 4331 Mahoning Avenue NW in Warren will welcome customers as Variety Wholesalers, a discount retailer known for closeouts and bargain shopping, took over operations.

Variety Wholesalers confirmed in May that it would be reopening three locations in the region, with the New Castle, Pa., store at 2611 Ellwood Road scheduled to open on May 15.

The reopening comes after Big Lots announced in December 2024 that it would be closing all its locations after a potential sale of the company fell through. The closures included stores in Austintown, Niles, Warren, Sharon, and New Castle.

According to a press release from Business Wire, Variety Wholesalers aims to offer a "treasure hunt shopping experience" at the reopened stores.

Big Lots, headquartered in Columbus, had operated over 1,420 stores across 48 states and had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, leading to numerous store closures nationwide.
