2000: Mahoning County commissioners are told it could cost $2 million to complete repairs at the South Side Annex on Market Street that houses the board of elections, coroner's office, Children Services Board, and county board of elections. The annex was built in 1956 as a department store on Treasure Island and was bought by the county in 1975.
Lake Erie water levels are reaching record lows, exposing decades-old shipwrecks at various sites, including Presque Isle State Park.
A team of eighth graders from Struthers will travel to Iowa State University to compete in the national Destination Imagination competition after winning the Ohio title.
1985: The three candidates for the Democratic nomination for mayor of Youngstown downplayed by varying degrees the mob influence in the city during a debate sponsored by the Youngstown Press Club on WFMJ-TV. Police Capt. Tony Ignazio says, based on his 26 years on the police force, "You can't prove that organized crime exists here." Councilman Pete Starks blames U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. for embellishing stories about mob influence in the city. Even Mayor Patrick Ungaro acknowledges that he testified in Washington about organized crime, but denied he implied that the mob controls everything.
A dispute over a wage-reopener clause in their contract idles about 160 workers at the Sawhill Tubular Products Division of Cyclops Corp. at Wheatland, Pa.
Federal officials have given a green light to Youngstown and the Cafaro Co. to enter into various agreements that will trigger a $9.3 million federal grant toward the proposed $32 million Ronneburg Brewery in North Jackson.
1975: Six Ohio State Highway Patrolmen, five Mahoning County deputies, a Portage County deputy, and an OSP airplane pursue two Lake Milton boys before they are arrested in the woods near Leisure Lake in Portage County. The boys, 15 and 16, are charged with auto theft.

1950: Construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway would not be a handout from the government to the steel industry, Norman W. Foy, general manager of sales for Republic Steel Corp., tells a House public works committee.
Youngstown is selected as the site of the 1951 convention of the Ohio Grand Commandery of the Knights of St. John. More than 100 delegates attended the 1950 convention in Cleveland.
Dr. Pauline V. Powers, a teacher of blind students at Chaney High School, receives an award of $2,000 as the "Best Teacher of 1950" in the annual contest conducted by NBC's "Quiz Kids" program.
