Liberty farm blends sustainability & education with salt water battery
TRUMBULL COUNTY, OH - Nestled in Liberty Township, Bending Oak Educational Farm is more than a farm -- It's a 25-acre, off-the-grid outdoor classroom redefining how people connect with nature.
From fruit trees to chickens and rustic cabins to composting stations, the nonprofit farm is a living "experiment" in sustainability, education and serenity.
The farm includes a range of trees and plants that grow fruit, mushrooms and a variety of other things. It also maintains bee hives and a large pond with geese and fish, among other attractions for relaxation or play.
At its heart is a rare system of permaculture ecosystems designed to thrive into the future with minimal human input.
“We're not here to profit off production. Our goal here is for education exploration," said Nancy Duker, director of Bending Oak, "We're more interested in getting people out here to explore with us."
Visitors can immerse themselves in nature while learning about plant life and regenerative land practices.
“Once you set them up, it takes little to no human input to sustain them and keep them growing,” Duker said of the permaculture systems.
Workshops, trails and camping experiences are open to all ages.
New this season at the farm is a saltwater battery system, a cutting-edge clean energy project Duker said is one of the only systems of its kind in the country.
“There’s a couple in California, and there’s maybe one or two in Hawaii. But other than that, I know of no others in the United States,” she added.
Visitors are invited to walk the farm, take a tour or learn how to apply Bending Oak’s sustainable practices in a household environment.
“Learn what permaculture principles we use to develop them, and then there's also suggestions on how you could apply what we did here at the farm at your home,” she said.
Bending Oak’s season-opening celebration kicks off this weekend at 100 Cottage Grove Drive when workshops for kids and adults will be offered throughout the summer and into the fall.
