YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The city of Youngstown is looking to revitalize and renovate the area of Spring Commons Park and B&O Station.

The project is a part of the 10 Appalachian Community Grant Program projects that were awarded in Mahoning, Trumbull and Ashtabula Counties.

According to an interactive map provided by Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, the project will have a total cost of $3,891,475.

The cost of the project is broken down into two phases in this interactive map - Phase 1 and Phase 2.

Phase 1 outlines the renovations to the B&O Station in partnership with a private property owner. The cost breakdown of this aspect is $913,099.

The status of Phase 1 as of May 6 is seen in the interactive map as 75% complete with the building's roof, windows and exterior masonry completed.

Phase 2 is outlined as the design/bid/build park improvement construction phase.

A tree and bush removal proposal is also listed as received and under evaluation according to the interactive map.

According to the interactive map, geotechnical on-site work is complete with 10% design plans anticipated following a stakeholder meeting.

The stakeholder meeting, originally scheduled for March 6 with the Mahoning Commons Association, organized by Youngstown Cityscape, was rescheduled until April 8 to consider additional designs before public presentation.

The meeting was an opportunity for the design and engineering team to present site plans for feedback and input that could be incorporated into the project.

According to Justin Mondok, the Director of Planning and Development at Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, the next stage of design is anticipated in June or July, with a final design estimated to be available by the end of the summer.

According to Deputy Director of Public Works Chuck Shasho with the city of Youngstown, the city will be the one to administer the construction to the area.

According to Mondok, the project is being worked on the City of Youngstown's Parks and Recreation, Economic Development and Public Works Departments alongside Eastgate Regional Council of Governments.

In addition, B&O Station and other stakeholders are involved in the project as design and engineering for project progresses.
