Sharpsville's Palko swings for the record books
Sharpsville softball standout Lily Palko has put together an impressive career with the Blue Devils.
The senior shortstop had 37 career home runs entering Wednesday's game at Mohawk.
According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, no softball player in Pennsylvania has hit 38 career homers.
Palko wasted no time swinging for the fences in the first inning for home run number 38.
"My timing was on, I felt like I hit that pretty solid," said Palko. "It was more of a line drive home run but I got enough behind it and whipped it pretty good over the fence."
Palko began playing softball at a young age. Sharpsville head coach Mark Piccirilli coached the standout on and off since the age of nine.
"I've been around Sharpsville softball, I had two daughters that played and we had some hitters but nothing like her," said Piccirilli. "She's just one of a kind. I don't know if we're going to see that again."
She etched her name into the record books and holds the top spot for career homers at Sharpsville High School and in Mercer County. Palko has been on a tear throughout her senior campaign batting over .600 with 31 hits, 36 RBI's and 10 homers.
"It just means that my hard work is paying off since I was little and this is what I've been working for since I was about nine years old," said Palko.
Palko is taking her talents to the Big Ten to join the University of Michigan softball program.
"Ever since I was little I wanted to go there, it's been my school," said Palko.
Piccirilli recognized Palko's talent at a young age, it's no surprise to see her success.
"She puts in the work. We'll have hitting practice and she'll drive to Akron after and go hit," said Piccirilli. "She just has total dedication and I think she'll take that to the next level and she'll be ready."
