WARREN, Ohio - Aptiv will close its Plant 10 in Warren, resulting in the layoff of 63 employees, according to a letter sent to union members.

Joseph Ferradino, president of IUE-CWA Local 717, which represents workers at four Aptiv plants in Warren, said in the letter that the company informed the union of the closure during an emergency meeting. The closure, effective July 14, 2025, will impact 46 production workers and 17 skilled trades employees. The workers make battery cables for automobiles.

Ferradino told 21 news the company will be outsourcing the production and the plant will no longer be needed.

Ferradino said in the letter that Aptiv the outsourcing was unrelated to the previously announced separation of Aptiv and its Electrical Distribution Systems (EDS) business. The company stated that the move has been in the works since August 2022, when Aptiv began outsourcing its copper business, with production being moved to Mexico.

In January, Aptiv announced its intention to separate its EDS business into an independent company, a move expected to be completed by March 31, 2026. Aptiv said the separation would allow both entities to focus on their distinct product portfolios and market opportunities.

The Warren plant closure involves a portion of Aptiv's current operations that design and manufacture vehicle components and provide electrical and electronic and active safety technology solutions to the global automotive and commercial vehicle markets. Local 717 represents workers at the former Delphi Automotive, which became Aptiv in 2018.

Aptiv has three other plants in the Mahoning Valley. Plant 11 & 7 are in Warren and Plant 47 is in Vienna. The other plants are not effected by the outsourcing and Ferradino said their are no signs they will close in the future.

Union officials plan to meet with management in the coming weeks to discuss ways to mitigate the impact on the affected workers. Ferradino is hoping workers can be transferred to another plant or will be offered a severance package.

"We will keep you informed along the way," Ferradino wrote. He encouraged members with questions to contact their union representative or the chairman’s office at the union hall.

21 News has reached out to Aptiv officials for comment and is still waiting for a response.
