The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was in McDonald on Wednesday working to find the source of a spill into the Mahoning River.

A spokesperson for the EPA tells 21 News its Office of Emergency Response (OER) was in the village on Wednesday, May 7 to investigate the source of the spill and stop the release of what is being described as an "oil-based material."

OER installed contaminant booms to further prevent the material from getting to the Mahoning River. Contractors are still working to remove the material.

OER will continue to monitor these cleanup efforts in the coming days and weeks. There is no word yet on what exactly caused the spill or what exactly the material is.

In the meantime, the EPA says there is no danger in residents' drinking water.
