Penn State 'disappointed' by report naming Shenango, other campus closures

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa - Penn State University officials expressed disappointment Monday after a Philadelphia Inquirer report identified seven Commonwealth Campuses proposed for closure, including the Shenango Campus in Sharon.
In a news release, the university acknowledged the report but emphasized that no final decisions have been made by the Board of Trustees, which must hold a public vote on the matter.
"It is regrettable that our communities who may be impacted by campus closures are hearing information before a final decision by the Board of Trustees and an announcement from the University," the release stated. "That someone would share this information with the media, knowing how this news would impact our campus communities, is truly disappointing."
The Inquirer reported Monday that the administration is proposing to close the Dubois, Fayette, Mont Alto, New Kensington, Shenango, Wilkes-Barre, and York campuses.
Board of Trustees Chair David Kleppinger echoed the university's sentiment, calling the premature reporting "disheartening" and "deeply frustrating."
"Given the complexity of this decision, trustees will be taking additional time to review the President’s recommendation and the supporting materials," Kleppinger said in a statement included in the release. "There is significant information in the full recommendation which will be shared following a board vote."
Penn State announced in late February that it would be closing some of its Commonwealth Campuses due to declining enrollment, demographic shifts, and financial pressures. While some campuses were identified as not being part of the potential closures, Shenango was not on that list.
21 News reported in April that a representative for Penn State Shenango said the university delayed a decision on closures until mid-May due to final exams, commencement, and other milestone events.
Penn State's news release stated that the Board of Trustees will meet in executive session on Thursday to continue discussing President Dr. Neeli Bendapudi’s recommendation for the Commonwealth Campus system. A previously scheduled public meeting for Thursday was changed to the executive session to allow for more discussion.
The university said more information regarding the timing of a public meeting would be shared after Thursday's executive session.
