COLUMBUS, Ohio - A citizen-led effort to eliminate property taxes in Ohio is moving forward.

The proposal was unanimously approved by the Ohio Ballot Board to be one constitutional amendment Wednesday afternoon.

The Citizens for Property Tax Reform and the Committee to Eliminate Property Taxes in Ohio teamed up to submit the petition.

The group collected at least 1,000 signatures to submit the petition to the Ohio Attorney General's Office.

The AG's Office accepted the petition last Friday, paving the way for the Ballot Board's review.

They're asking for the legislature to change the current complex structure of bills based on property assessments, giving seniors bigger discounts or throwing out the tax altogether.

Property taxes fund emergency responders, the state's infrastructure and public schools.

21 News spoke with representatives for the group last week who said they are not trying to defund public schools, but want the state to use an alternative method like an income or sales tax.

Now that the measure has been approved by the Ballot Board, the groups will need to collect at least 460,000 more signatures to get the issue on the ballot.
