Boardman man shot by police officer found guilty of felonious assault

BOARDMAN, Ohio - A Boardman man who was shot by police in a confrontation nearly four years ago has been found guilty of all charges against him.
Twenty-eight-year-old Damian Cessna had previously been found guilty of one count each of aggravated menacing and obstructing official business back in September of 2024.
However, a mistrial was declared for one count of felonious assault in that case because a jury could not reach a unanimous verdict and a new trial was ordered.
After a few hours of deliberation on Thursday, a new jury found Cessna guilty on the remaining count.
Cessna originally pled guilty in this case in August of 2023, but that plea was withdrawn prompting a jury trial.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred in July of 2021 when police responded to a call about a man, later identified as Cessna, on a bicycle with a baseball bat on South Avenue near Mathews Road.
When police confronted Cessna, he pulled out a knife and would not drop it when police asked him to. Police shot and wounded Cessna after the confrontation escalated.
There is no word yet on when Cessna's sentencing will be.
