MAHONING TOWNSHIP, Pa. - A New Middletown police officer was life-flighted to a Youngstown hospital late Sunday after his cruiser crashed during a pursuit that began in Ohio and ended in Pennsylvania, according to authorities.

The 100-mph pursuit concluded around 9 p.m. in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, when the officer's vehicle struck a dog grooming business near the intersection of Mohawk School Road and a five-way junction south of the Mohawk Area School District complex, Pennsylvania State Police reported.

Both the building and the police cruiser sustained damage. The officer was transported by helicopter to a Youngstown hospital for treatment of back injuries.

The vehicle being pursued continued to flee the scene, and authorities are still searching for the driver.

New Middletown Police Chief Anthony Protopapa tells 21 News that the pursuit began after the car sped past the officer in the Village.

The chief says his officer is being treated for broken ribs, but is expected to recover.

The chief didn't release the name of the officer, who has been with the department for nearly one year.
