BELOIT, Ohio - Seats at the West Branch district school board meeting were full of parents wanting answers.

This was after a text message between West Branch school board president Mikki Kanagy and superintendent Micki Egli was uncovered by podcasters the MLO bros.

The text messages discussed the removal of coach Walt DeShields, and an alleged sexual assault incident involving his son.

Parents who went to the meeting said they were fed up.

“We want to address this elephant in the room. And, this is not something they can just brush off and hope everybody is going to forget,” said parent Svtlana Herron.

The MLO Bros got the text messages after making a public records request.

The messages from Kanagy read “ If he doesn't back down, I am taking him and TJ down.” It goes on to say “I am at the point of getting a new investigation and legalities about his son's sexual assault…”

The messages also discussed potential options for a statement for the press.

Egli said she regrets being a part of the conversation.

“That text message situation should not have happened. I admit that, I've learned from it, and we all make mistakes,” said Egli.

Egli said she reported the alleged incident to the school resource officer, and nothing done was illegal. Even so, Parents at the meeting asked for both the board president and superintendent to resign.

“I am very proud of our district. So, stepping down would be very difficult for me. But I can retire this year,” said Egli.

Coach Deshields spoke to the parents after the board meeting, and said the incident was not sexual assault.

“The incident in the weight room happened. He took a rubber band off the floor, slapped the girl on the back of the legs, okay? Not hard,” said DeShields.

He went on to say that he’s reached out to parents of the girl involved in the incident to get their side of the story.

“I can only hope the truth comes out, but basically, we’re trying to get through it, one day at a time, one step at a time,” said DeShields.

During the board meeting, DeShields’ retirement was announced, but he is still coaching girls basketball at West Branch.

“I’m here really to be a basketball coach. It’s important to me, the schools [are] important to me, the community. I've been here a long, long time,” said DeShields.

His wife also resigned from her administrative position at the school. DeShields said their decisions were not related to recent events.
