HERMITAGE, Pa. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District will reopen some campsites at Shenango River Lake on Friday, May 23, after a temporary closure due to high water levels.

Heavy rainfall in late April caused significant flooding, submerging campsites, roads and other areas around the lake. Approximately 49% of the campsites will remain closed.

The New Duck Loop campsites will not reopen due to persistent high water. Additionally, select campsites in Pine Loop will remain closed to protect a nesting pair of federally protected bald eagles, in compliance with federal wildlife regulations. The nest is located between campsites 106 and 108.

Park rangers have established a 330-foot no-disturbance buffer zone around the active nest and ask visitors to respect the area to ensure the eagles' safety.

Campers visiting the reopened areas are advised to exercise caution. Larry Bengough, the Pittsburgh District’s safety manager, warned that camping areas "may have debris, lake scum, and an increased presence of mosquitoes" after floodwaters recede. He urged campers to be vigilant for hazards, noting that the ground may still be wet, creating conditions favorable for mosquito breeding.

To address mosquito concerns, a contractor will spray the campground for mosquitoes Thursday, May 22, before the reopening. Visitors are encouraged to bring insect repellent and wear protective clothing, especially during early morning and evening hours when mosquitoes are most active.

Visitors are asked to report any unsafe conditions to park staff.
