Memorial Day weekend is here, and there are plenty of ways people are celebrating in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys.

Mahoning County

On May 26 at 9:15 a.m., Sons of the American Legion will conduct its annual Four Chaplains ceremony at the War Memorial Building Post 15 at 35 Cortland Street in Poland. At 10 a.m., the annual Memorial Day Procession will leave from Post 15 and will travel down College Street, then turn right on South Main Street, where a ceremony for those lost at sea will take place on the Main Street Bridge. Organizers are asking musicians, especially those who play trumpet, to perform Taps to honor and remember those lost at the time of the ceremony on the Main Street Bridge. The procession continues on South Main Street, turning left onto Riverside Drive, for full Memorial Day ceremonies.

121st Annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: May 26, beginning at 10 a.m., located at Boardman Township Park, 375 Boardman-Poland Road, Boardman. The parade begins at Boardman Center Intermediate School on Market Street and proceeds north to State Route 224 before heading east to Boardman Township Park. Following the parade is the Memorial Mile, a running race, which will follow the same route as the parade. Applications to participate in the race are available at Chili's. At approximately 11 a.m., the Memorial Day ceremony will take place at the Boardman Park Maag Outdoor Amphitheater.

Canfield Memorial Day Parade: May 26, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Plaza at the Village Green. A keynote speaker is featured during the 10 a.m. ceremony. Following the ceremony, attendees will head to the Canfield Cemetery on East Main Street where a prayer and volley salute will be featured. Following the prayer and volley salute, there will be a march to the War Vet Museum at 23 East Main Street to hold a program and dedicate four new names.

Trumbull County

Hubbard Memorial Day Procession: May 26. Line-up for the procession begins at 9:30 a.m. on Princeton Avenue in Hubbard. At 10 a.m., the procession will continue to the Hubbard Union Cemetery. Following, the procession will march to the War Memorial at Tylee Park next to the fire department for the conclusion of the service.

Rotary Club of Champion Memorial Day Parade: May 26, beginning at 9 a.m. from Champion High School, 5976 Mahoning Avenue NW, Warren. Line-up starts no later than 8:30 a.m. The parade will continue from the high school and will turn on to Route 305, concluding at the Eastern Champion Cemetery entrance. A service will follow the parade.

Brookfield Memorial Day Procession: May 26, beginning at 10 a.m. on Grove Street near the library and leading to the cemetery, where a ceremony will take place. Participants are asked to gather on Grove Street at 9:30 a.m. for lineup at 9:45 a.m. The featured speaker will be U.S. Marine Corps veteran and Brookfield alumnus Corban Baker. The Ladies Auxiliary of the Fire Department will host a luncheon at the fire station following the ceremony.

Columbiana County

Memorial Day at Birdfish Brewing Company: May 26 from noon to 9 p.m. at Birdfish Brewing Company, 140 East Park Avenue, Columbiana. The taproom will be open, in addition to A Taste of Lariccia's food trailer set up on the patio, serving from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Bar bingo is also featured at this event from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Prizes can be won, and it is free to play.

Mercer County

Jason Michaels Memorial 5K: May 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., beginning at the Mercer County Courthouse, 5 Courthouse, Mercer. Registration for the race is available online here up to the race beginning for $35. In-person race day registration will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. for $45.

Mercer Memorial Day 500: May 24 to May 26. Several events are happening during this three-day event, including:

  • May 24 - Memorial Day Big Bucks Bingo, starting at 6 p.m. at the East End Fire Hall, 104 Wilson Avenue, Mercer.
  • May 25 - Salute to Service Concert with live music performed by Chris Higbee at 4 p.m. at the Mercer County Courthouse Lawn, located at 125 South Diamond Street, Mercer.
  • May 26 - Beginning at 8 a.m., there will be doughnuts and coffee on South Diamond Street. Jason Michael's Memorial 5K begins at 8:30 a.m., with the Basement Band performing at the bandstand at 9 a.m. Vendors also open at 9 a.m. An honoree ceremony will take place at the bandstand at 9:30 a.m. with the 20th Annual Mercer Memorial Day 500 Parade to begin at 11 a.m. The parade will be followed by a cemetery service at the Mercer Citizens Cemetery at noon. The Mercer County Historical Society will have its grand opening following the parade.

Greenville Memorial Day Parade: May 26 beginning at 9 a.m. The parade begins on Main Street and will continue to College Avenue before ending at the Shenango Valley Cemetery. A ceremony will follow at the American Legion Post 140, located at 278  Main Street, Greenville. A second ceremony will follow, located at the Veteran's Bridge.
