BOARDMAN, Ohio - Several Boardman High School (BHS) students received awards for their submissions to the "Blackout Poetry" contest that The Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County held in the spring.

According to a news release, more than 550 submissions were entered into the contest.

Blackout poetry can be made when someone takes a block of text, such as from a newspaper, magazine or book, and uses a sharpie marker to black out the words they do not want to use. The words left over create the poem.

BHS students Gianna Ross and Reagan Ridgley earned 4th and 8th place respectively.

A second aspect of the "Blackout Poetry" contest was creating artwork that matched the poem. Kaylee Trolio won 1st place and Liza Letunova won 3rd place in "Art Connects with Poetry".

Both students received awards that were laser edged and engraved to replicate the art, according to the release.

"We always say they can be as creative as they want, and this year we have received some gorgeous pieces of art to go with their poems," said Burkard.

She continued," They were truly impressive!"
