Downtown business owner questions proposed event center, retail space
The city of Youngstown owns a small plot of grassy land on the east end of downtown at East Boardman and East Federal Streets.
Next week, its Design Review Committee will on Tuesday consider plans for a new event center and retail building to go in its place.
It sits smack between Youngstown Flea and Aspasia Lyras-Bernacki's Penguin City Brewing Company.
"I didn't know that there was even talks of doing something on that," she told 21 News Friday.
Lyras-Bernacki made it known to city leaders that if plans for the land ever did come up, she and Youngstown Flea owner Derrick McDowell wanted to be involved in the talks - namely to set aside more space to park downtown.
But she says they both got left out of the loop.
She also has concerns for the bigger picture.
"I do want more businesses downtown, but you know at the same time, we have to make sure that it all works together too," she said. "You don't want a million of one thing."
While Mayor Tito Brown realizes that parking is a factor, he said "we've had multiple individuals say 'hey, I'd like to have it for parking'. We're not into parking, we're into development and this is a great opportunity for retail and development downtown."
McDowell is also running to replace Mayor Brown.
Brown says this proposal got submitted before McDowell decided to run.
We reached out to McDowell, along with the woman who submitted the proposal, but did not hear back by deadline.
