CANFIELD, Ohio - It was a day filled with laughter, energy, and heartfelt support at the Canfield Fairgrounds, where the Mahoning Valley Warrior returned for its sixth year. The event, hosted by the Autism Society of the Mahoning Valley, brought families, advocates, and children together to raise awareness and build community for those affected by autism.

This year’s Warrior event included a wide range of family-friendly activities, from bounce houses and games to a sensory-friendly inflatable village and petting zoo. A special highlight was the Valley’s largest Special Needs Resource Fair, where local service providers connected with families seeking support.

“Today, we are celebrating the wonderful autism families that make up the Mahoning Valley,” said Stacie Bacorn, Executive Director of the Autism Society of the Mahoning Valley. “All of those families that come out and support them every day here in the Mahoning Valley.”

Despite overcast skies and uncertain weather, a large crowd gathered early, ready to take part in the day’s festivities. Bacorn emphasized that while awareness is important, inclusion is critical. “We have to make sure that inclusion is happening every single day,” she said. “That’s how you create understanding in the community.”

Among those in attendance was the Sugar family from New Middletown. They've been part of the event for several years, rallying behind their 9-year-old son Jaxson, who is on the autism spectrum.

“We are here today for Team Action for Jaxson,” said Jaxson’s mother, Angie Sugar. “Jaxson is on the spectrum, and he is a fourth year in a row top raising team.”

This year, the family helped raise nearly $8,000 to support autism programs across the Valley.

For the Sugar family, the event means more than fundraising. “It provides community and the acceptance of children on the spectrum,” Angie said. “And it’s a beautiful event that we put on every year.”

Whether running in the kids’ fun race, enjoying the bounce houses, or walking with their support teams, families said the real impact of the Mahoning Valley Warrior is the feeling of unity it brings—one that reminds them they are not alone.
