Sharon Robotics Team recognized at West Coast event

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Sharon Tiger Techs Robotics Team, representing the Sharon City School District, received the Innovation Project Finalist Award at the Western Edge Invitational in Long Beach, California. The team competed in the FIRST LEGO League Division against 83 other teams.
The Innovation Project Award recognizes teams that demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of a problem, develop a researched solution, and communicate their findings.
The Sharon team was recognized for "Scuba PAL," a scuba tank transmitter designed to communicate oxygen levels to divers audibly. Over eight months, the team refined their prototype and consulted with various experts, including a computer science teacher, a mechanical engineer, scuba divers, a scuba store owner, and the Hermitage Fire Department.
The team secured a provisional patent for the device with assistance from Robert Sovesky of K and L Gates in Pittsburgh.
In addition to their innovation project, the team participated in robot table games and an alliance robot competition. They designed, built and programmed a LEGO Spike Prime Robot to perform autonomous tasks on a themed playing field. The team placed 11th out of 83 teams in robot performance.
The Sharon Tiger Techs Robotics Team is part of the FIRST LEGO League organization, which stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology."
The team includes students from fourth through ninth grades and is led by Dave Tomko and Kelly Roys. Sponsors and the Sharon City School District provide funding for the team.
