2000: Dickey Avenue School in Youngstown will hold an open house on the last day of the school year, which is also the last day for the school, built in 1905.

Since 1977, when a garage floor disappeared into a coal mine beneath Hylda Avenue, Youngstown State University Professor Ann Harris has identified 547 mines in Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana counties. She says only about 60 percent of the mines are mapped. 

Ursuline High School wins the state Division III baseball title, defeating Versailles, 4-3, after falling behind 2-0 in the first inning. Poland High's track team wins the state title in boys track, the first Mahoning County School to win the title since 1993.

 

1985: President Ronald Reagan declared four Ohio counties and 12 in Pennsylvania federal disaster areas, opening new avenues of aid for victims of area tornadoes.

Dr. Jerry M. Boone, 43, dean of student affairs, has been named interim president of Westminster College, succeeding Dr. Philip A. Lewis, acting president, who retired. 

A bomb demolishes Sugar's Place, the former El Doroso tavern, at 8986 Youngstown-Poland Road in Poland. Agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms are on the scene. 

 

1975: Rosemary Durkin, chief deputy clerk of Youngstown Municipal Court, upsets the Democratic Party-endorsed candidate, Nick Palazzo, in the primary race for clerk of municipal court. 

Clerk of Municipal Court George Vukovich wins the Democratic nomination for mayor of Youngstown, receiving 10,662 votes, which was 2,331 more than his nearest rival, Councilman Jerome McNally. 

Former Youngstowner John DeMain conducts the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as part of a conductors' festival at Heinz Hall. DeMain is associate conductor of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. 

 

1950: The Rayen School Alumni Association plans its annual reunion at the school auditorium. Atty. Kenneth Shafer will welcome the Class of 1950, and Ted Kasselman will respond on behalf of the class. 

Three former Youngstown brothers are midshipmen together at the U.S. Naval Academy. They are Don, Eddy, and Tommy Stolle, ages 20, 21, and 22, respectively. It's the first time three brothers have been at the academy together. 

Chrysler Corp. celebrates its 25th anniversary. The company was founded with 10,000 employees and two products, the Maxwell 4 and the Chrysler 6. It has grown to 610,000 employees at 32 plants producing Chrysler, DeSoto, Dodge, and Plymouth vehicles.
