TRUMBULL COUNTY, OH - Another day and yet another sighting of a bear wandering throughout Trumbull County.

"They're an endangered species. There's not an exact number. The estimate is between 50 and 100 black bear, and they're moving through," said Joe Ferrara, ODNR Wildlife Research Technician, referencing the number of black bears in the state of Ohio.

Those metrics would suggest the chances of seeing these large mammals, who are active at night, would be pretty slim.  However, there have been four sightings in the last ten days.

Birdfeeders, bee apiaries, like the one raided in Bazetta last month provide quite the dining experience for these large mammals.

"If you're in some of these areas, you may consider taking taking the feeder down for a few weeks just to let things go through, and then you could feed your birds again. If you've got beehives, should really consider electric fencing," said Ferrara.

Ferrara says it hard to determine if the same the bear has been making all these rounds, but that they can cover a lot of ground in a short time.

"They maybe in Youngstown today, and could be in Pittsburgh two days from now," he added.

Young male bears looking for a mate tend to do the most traveling. If you come across a black bear, you're advised to stand tall, stay calm and exit the situation, and don't antagonize them.
