Mecca Township celebrates local fishing innovation

MECCA TWP., Ohio - Mecca Township trustees held a special meeting a 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 12 with the Trumbull County Planning Commission to discuss placing a historic marker to commemorate the invention of the Erie Dearie fishing lure.
Erie Dearie is a brand of spinning bait fishing lures used for catching walleye and other fish species commonly found in Lake Erie.
The Erie Dearie fishing lure was invented by Captain Dan Galbincea, the owner of Causeway Sportshop in Mecca Township in the 1960's.
Today, the lure is a mainstay of tackleboxes and Gabincea's son, Dan is a Mecca Township trustee.
"He'd have 100 boats following him to his favorite fishing spot," said Gabincea.
Captain Gabincea's invention caught the eye of charter boat captains and fishermen, who often asked to get a Erie Dearie off of him. This demand was enough cause for him to begin manufacturing the lure.
The historical marker is just a small part of the Trumbull County Planning Commission's "Comprehensive Plan," which they also met up at 7 p.m. on Thursday to hold.
