Youngstown City Council approves performance audit for police, fire departments

YOUNGSTOWN - The Ohio Auditor of state will be conducting a performance audit into Youngstown's Police and Fire Departments.
Youngstown City Council unanimously agreed to spend $120,000 on the audit at Wednesday's council meeting. According to the passed ordinance, the state auditor will "provide recommendations for improved compliance and opportunities for efficiency."
This comes after Sixth Ward Councilwoman Anita Davis formally requested the state auditor's office to look into the departments back in March.
Davis previously told 21 News that the fire department was doing a better job with its overtime, but the police department has not. She said the audit will help look into everything from the use of police cruisers to scheduling.
“This audit, what it will show is whether or not that overtime is needed or whether it needs to be a matter of scheduling. But either way, the public can know that this overtime is justified or not justified,” said Davis.
In other business, Council voted against purchasing 11 new police vehicles.
