2000: For the second time in a month, a prisoner at the Federal Correctional Institution in Elkton has walked away from the minimum-security camp. The missing inmate is a 59-year-old Cleveland man serving 20 years for conspiracy to distribute cocaine.

Former Mahoning County Commissioner Frank Lordi has asked the 7th District Court of Appeals to overturn his conviction on a charge of theft in office, claiming he didn't receive a fair trial.

In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in a Texas case that prayers led by students before a high school football game violated the constitutional requirement of separation of church and state.

 

1985: Memos show that the Ohio Department of Transportation knew that slag that was to be used on a $10-million resurfacing project on I-80 at the state line was suspected in the failure of a stretch of road built earlier near New Philadelphia.

Emergency repairs costing $50,000 are scheduled to begin on the Mahoning Avenue Bridge, which is slated for replacement, but not for at least five years.

U.S. Sen. John Glenn, D-Ohio, is proposing a nationwide presidential primary election that would be held during a 24-hour period.

 

1975: Five people were arrested after six cruisers were dispatched to the Tomorrow Club in the former State Theater when a crowd of people became unruly after Patrolman Ron Skowron told them to move on.

An irate farmer in Jeannette, Pa., tired of the noise of airplanes taking off and landing from Pittsburgh-Boquet Air Park, says a private plane that crashed in his field is his now. He refuses access to the wreckage to investigators.

Youngstown City Council passes a new noise ordinance allowing police officers to gauge when a motor vehicle is too loud without having access to a device to measure the decibels.

 

1950: Dr. Albert Einstein suggests that the United States and the Soviet Union surrender their stockpiles of atomic bombs to an international authority as part of a systematic disarmament of all countries.

A three-way arrangement among the General Fireproofing Co., the USW, and Prudential Insurance Co. will provide pensions for approximately 3,000 GF employees. Employees with 25 years of service will get a minimum of $100 a month.
