2000: Officials of cities in the Mahoning Valley say a proposed  half-percent income tax for Lordstown schools would  unfairly shift the burden for supporting those local schools to  General Motors employees who  live  elsewhere. Lordstown already has a half-percent income tax for the village. 

Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are in Columbiana County to evaluate a drill scenario in which a problem occurs at the Beaver Valley Power Station, a nuclear facility located in Shippingport, Pennsylvania. 

Former Youngstown Municipal Court Judge Andrew Polovischak, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate the RICO Act, was sentenced to 24 to 30 months in a federal prison. He could have faced 20 years before reaching a plea deal. 

 

1985: Mahoning County deputies arrest five men and confiscate $20,000 worth of illegal fireworks after undercover officers bought various fireworks, some of which were believed to have been made at a Beaver Township plant that exploded in May, killing nine people. 

Youngstown City Council agrees to let Mayor Patrick Ungaro pursue a federal grant to develop a riverfront park, but showed little enthusiasm for the project. 

Speaking in Pittsburgh, United Mine Workers President Richard Trumka says the Democratic Party has given in to big money interests, and organized labor may have to look elsewhere for political support. 

 

1975: Chester A. Amedia is welcomed as the Youngstown Rotary Club's new president at the annual President's Ball at the Youngstown Club.  The outgoing president is Dr. Sidney Berkowitz. 

Financing and the need to broaden its appeal are the two major problems facing the Republican Party in Ohio, according to state GOP Chairman Kent McGough, who addresses a meeting of Mahoning Valley Republicans.

The national convention of Jaycees votes to continue its ban on women as members. Those chapters that have admitted women will be considered outlaws. 

 

1950: Ruth Allen, 24-year-old daughter of Police Sgt. and Mrs. Robert G. Allen of Youngstown, is among the American Embassy employees in Seoul, South Korea, which is under attack from North Korea. 

County commissioners may be able to negotiate for cellblocks in the city jail to house county inmates if the 41-year-old Mahoning County jail is ruled unfit for occupancy.
