Salem City School Board members met at the junior senior high school to discuss potentially bringing back retired employees, including a superintendent, principal, teacher and a librarian.

"They have some institutional knowledge as well as the day to day aspects of the school and what is going on, relationships with the current teachers," Salem City Schools Treasurer, Michael Douglas, said.

Of the four retirees, two would work in the high school while the others would assist in the transition of four schools consolidating into one new K-8 building.

"For the two administrators, it'd be the continuity of the project," Douglas said. "We will save a little money on the principal contract because she will be coming back at a reduced salary plus we will be eliminating that position when we go into the new building so that will be about $130,000 savings," he said.

It's not just the district who will benefit, the retirees will still receive their pensions so it's a win-win for everyone involved.

"I think it's a great opportunity for both the district to save a little money and for the retirees to still transition into retirement and still have some duties in the school which they enjoyed for over 30 years," Douglas said.

It still has to be put to a vote where a decision will be made at the July 28th meeting.
