New Springfield mining company cited for failure to submit monthly discharge reports

NEW SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - A mining company based out of New Springfield has been cited by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for not submitting several months worth of discharge reports.
According to the notice of violation sent to Thompson Bros. Mining Co., the facility has not submitted monthly electronic Discharge Monitoring Reports in June and July of 2024, as well as October of 2024 through May of 2025.
The letter, dated Wednesday, July 2 ordered the facility to provide documentation of actions taken or that will be taken to resolve this matter within 30 days or face administrative or civil penalties.
A representative for the Ohio EPA tells 21 News these reports are necessary to check a facility's effluent levels. Mining companies are required to submit these reports each month as a condition of their wastewater discharge permits.
21 News has reached out to Thompson Bros. Mining Co. for comment, but we have not heard back yet.
