EAST PALESTINE, Ohio - Construction crews were on site at the Village of East Palestine "Welcome" sign on Friday.

A photo from the scene depicts a construction vehicle dismantling the "Welcome" sign.

However, the structure will soon be replaced by a brand new sign, funded by Norfolk Southern.

According to a news release from the Village of East Palestine website, the village is set to recieve a new sign at the intersection of North Market Street and State Route 14 to replace the current structure.

Construction on the new sign was set to begin in mid- to late April but it was delayed due to permitting issues with the Ohio Department of Transportation, according to the website release.

The project is being led by contractor Chris Kline of Dynamic Structures.

The design for the new sign features three 18-foot wide sections, each framed by two square piers. Additionally, a one-foot-high curb will elevate the sign.

Other elements that will be added to the new sign include gravel spaces at the base, two of which will feature flagpoles.

The center area may be landscaped with a shade tree, according to the website release.

It is unknown at this time when construction will complete on the new sign structure.
