LISBON, Ohio - Just days after a trailer at the Columbiana County Fairgrounds went into flames, a family is trying to find their way forward. 

The trailer is owned by Ryan and Sheri Higgins. Ryan Higgins was burned, and transported to the hospital. Sheri told 21 News Ryan is still being treated for the burns on his arms and legs.

Judy Noel, chairperson for the Lisbon Fireworks Committee, was near the trailer when it caught fire.

“It was like something out of the movies. A big fireball came out of the trailer and Ryan came out of the front serving area, dove out of the front serving area window onto the pavement,” said Noel. 

Noel said it was apparent the trailer meant a lot to Ryan and his family.

“He immediately went to the back of the trailer, went in, grabbed a fire extinguisher, and started to try to extinguish the fire,” said Noel.

According to Sheri, the inspection from firefighters shows the explosion was expected to have started because of a small gas leak, and a cord shorting out.

“It was their first year, their event as a vendor, and this was also the first year for the fireworks. So, it was like we were going into this together. So when this happened, it was devastating and I took it to heart,” said Noel.

Sheri and their child were not in the trailer at the time. Ryan got out of the hospital Friday, but is still recovering.

As for their business, Sheri said the family does not know what is next until they see how much repairs and medical bills will cost.

Meanwhile, the Lisbon Fireworks Committee is collecting donations for the Higgins family.

"The night of the event when the fire occurred, we immediately joined forces and took up a collection and took donations at our tent for the Higgins' family. We also put a post on our Facebook page that we are accepting donations for the Higgins' family," said Noel.

Noel said they raised $200 for the family the night of the fireworks celebration, but the group is still accepting donations.
